NO PLANET B
Today is the summer solstice, which begins when the tilt of the Earth’s axis is most inclined towards the sun directly above the Tropic of Cancer and the sun reaches its highest elevation in the Northern Hemisphere. This causes the longest day of the year, with 17 hours of sunlight and according to astronomers is the real start of summer.
We all love summer, but there is an alarming trend we can’t continue to ignore; Earth’s climate is warming. In the Antarctic and Greenland, we’re losing thousands of tons of ice per second. That’s 300 billion tons a year, which is a scarily large number and the rate at which these losses are occurring is increasing. In the U.S. the most recent decade was the nation’s warmest on record. The hottest days and nights have become more intense and frequent since the fifties, and there has been a market increase in the duration, intensity and frequency of extreme heat events, to say nothing of extreme weather events. And while all this is happening, we’re so inundated with the misdeeds and scandals of the White House; most of it is going unnoticed. This is just one more reason we need to up our game and get the word out that it’s vital we begin to change the political landscape. We need to bring facts, science, and reason back into our collective decision-making and the only way to do that is to vote out the flat-earth crowd. Let’s go Blue in 2018 and deep blue in 2020. The future depends on it. There is no Planet B
